A mouth-watering New Year treat is in store for tennis fans as world No.5 Agnieszka Radwanska and No.7 Venus Williams will be in the scenic beach resort of Hua Hin later this month to participate in an exhibition tournament.
The two-day 'World Tennis Thailand Championship 2016' will be played at Hua Hin Centennial Club from Dec 31 to Jan 1.
Suwat Liptapanlop, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT), told a press conference yesterday that Hua Hin will once again be the venue for a world-class tennis event this year.
He said: "We are trying to build on the success of events involving some of the biggest names in tennis staged in Thailand in the recent past.
"We had organised a similar exhibition tournament in Hua Hin at the same time last year with six of the top-ranked men's players competing.
"In October this year, we had the popular 'Back to Thailand' event by bringing two tennis legends, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, for a one-off exhibition match in Bangkok.
Giving details of the forthcoming event in Hua Hin, Suwat said: "The star attraction at the tournament will be Agnieszka Radwanska, the world No.5 from Poland who won the WTA World Tour Finals crown in Singapore in October.
"The other three players will be Venus Williams from the US, a winner of seven Grand Slam titles who is now ranked No.7 in the world, Germany's world No.10 Angelique Kerber and Italian world No.20 Sara Errani."
Suwat added that Williams had played in an event in Thailand a long time ago, but the other three will be making their first appearances in the Kingdom.
